In addition, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi has issued a notice prohibiting travel to the Kashmir area for official U.S. Government employees in India, either on permanent or temporary assignment. Private U.S. citizens may wish to take this into consideration when making travel plans. The Kashmir Valley and the surrounding mountains, in particular, remain a dangerous area where terrorist activities and violent civil disturbances continue as the result of actions by militant separatist groups. In addition to the most recent kidnappings, an American tourist was fatally shot in July 1994 in Srinagar, and in June 1994 militants held two British hikers hostage for eighteen days before releasing them. U.S citizens in India may wish to contact the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi for updated security information. The local U.S. Embassy number is: 600651. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- The "travel-advisories@stolaf.edu" mailing list is the official Internet and BITNET distribution point for the U.S. State Department Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets.
