A dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia has resulted in an outbreak of hostilities along the border. The conflict could expand without warning and significantly affect areas of both countries beyond the immediate border region, including major urban centers. Travel near or across the Eritrea/Ethiopia border should be avoided. All U.S. Embassy personnel in non-emergency positions and family members of U.S. Embassy personnel have been ordered to depart Eritrea because of the worsening security situation. U.S. citizens in Eritrea are urged to depart the country at this time. Commercial transportation to and from Eritrea is currently available; however, it may be subject to interruption without warning. Although the U.S. Government will continue to do everything possible to help U.S. citizens depart Eritrea, should the situation further deteriorate, the U.S. Government9s ability to assist may be limited. For further information on travel to Eritrea, please consult the Consular Information Sheet for Eritrea. This replaces the January 20, 1999, Travel Warning to reflect the outbreak of hostilities along the border and ordered departure status.
