Facilities for tourism are widely available. The U.S. Embassy in Barbados also has responsibility for U.S. citizens in the independent countries of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, as well as the British West Indies (Anguilla, British Virgin Islands and Montserrat) and several French islands (Martinique, Guadeloupe and their dependencies). Special Information on Montserrat: Volcanic activity on the island of Montserrat continues and is potentially dangerous. U.S. citizens considering travel to Montserrat may wish to contact the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown during normal business hours (8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.) at (809) 431-0225 or the Embassy switchboard, afterhours at (809) 436-4950, for current information prior to traveling. Entry Requirements: U.S. citizens may enter Barbados for up to 28 days without a valid passport, but must carry original documentation proving U.S. citizenship (valid passport, expired passport, U.S. birth certificate, or certificate of naturalization), photo identification and onward/return ticket. U.S. citizen visitors who enter Barbados without these items, even if admitted by immigration authorities, can encounter difficulties in boarding flights for return to the U.S. For further information concerning entry requirements for Barbados, travelers may contact the Embassy of Barbados at 2144 Wyoming Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel: (202) 939-9200 or the Consulate General in New York. U.S. citizens may enter the British West Indies for tourist stays of up to three months, with proof of U.S. citizenship, photo identification, onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds. For information on entry requirements for the six other independent countries under U.S. Embassy Barbados' responsibility, consult the Consular Information Sheets for those countries. Medical Facilities: Medical care is generally good, but may be limited in outlying areas. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. In some cases, supplementary medical insurance with specific overseas coverage, including provision for medical evacuation, may be useful. Valuables left unattended on the beach are subject to theft. The loss or theft of a U.S. passport overseas should be reported to the local police and the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. A lost or stolen U.S. birth certificate or driver's license generally cannot be replaced outside the United States. Useful information on guarding valuables and protecting personal security while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe Trip Abroad." Drug Penalties: U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in which they are traveling. Criminal penalties for possession, use, or dealing in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines. Aviation Oversight - Montserrat and Anguilla: In June 1992, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration assessed the civil aviation authority for Montserrat and Anguilla as in compliance with international aviation safety oversight standards for Organization of Eastern Caribbean States carriers operating to and from the U.S. However, during its assessment, the FAA noted that the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States' operations to destinations other than the U.S. are not provided a similar level of safety oversight.
