Return-Path: Date: Fri, 9 Mar 90 06:20:18 -0800 From: Chuq Von Rospach To: bzs@world.std.com Subject: Introduction to rec.mag.otherrealms Expires: 28 Feb 90 00:00:00 GMT [editor's note: I have *finally* gotten the last of the back issues into the anonymous FTP directory on apple.com. Sorry for the delay. Issue #26 should be available on the network within a week or so -- chuq] Welcome to rec.mag.otherrealms. This message is a regular posting that attempts to answer the most common questions asked about this newsgroup. If you have further questions, please send them to "chuq@apple.com" and I'll do my best to answer them. What is rec.mag.otherrealms: r.m.o is set up as a moderated newsgroup, but it is different from other newsgroups on USENET. It is not a moderated group. Instead it is a distribution method for an electronic magazine called OtherRealms. This is why r.m.o is empty most of the time: because OtherRealms is published quarterly it expires long before the next issue is published and there is rarely any message traffic between issues. It is not because nothing is happening, but because the information is delivered in a much different form than most of USENET. rec.mag.otherrealms is also a mailing list, primarily for Internet people who are not on USENET. If you can read rec.mag.otherrealms, you do not need to be on the mailing list -- and if you are, please let me know so I can remove you. I do not want to mail to sites that get r.m.o because it adds unnecessary loads to the sites carrying the email. Please use the USENET feed if it is available. What is OtherRealms: OtherRealms is fanzine about Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror. It's primary focus is reviews of books in these genres as well as discussions relating to books. A 'fanzine' is a term >from Science Fiction fandom for an amateur publication. The purpose of OtherRealms is to help people better understand the Science Fiction field and the people in it and be able to find the books to read that they will enjoy. OtherRealms is a nominee in two categories for the 1989 World Science Fiction Achievement Award (known at the Hugo): Best Fanzine and Best Fan Writer (Chuq Von Rospach). There is no cost to reading OtherRealms on USENET: my only request is that you abide by the copyrights on the material. Who does this: OtherRealms is edited by Chuq Von Rospach (chuq@apple.com) [SF, Horror, Behind the Scenes & Misc] and Laurie Sefton (lsefton@apple.com) [Fantasy & Science Fact]. OtherRealms is, however, a collaborative effort of many people -- including everyone who reads it and helps me make it a better publication with submissions, feedback and suggestions. Electronic back issues: are now available for anonymous ftp from Apple.com. To get them, ftp to "apple.com", log on as 'anonymous' with your name for a password. The issues are in the directory ~ftp/pub/otherrealms. Each issue is a separate file that is squished with the 'compress' program -- since it is binary data, set ftp mode to binary before copying it across, then use 'uncompress' to unsquish it. For people without anonymous ftp access: sorry, but there is no archive server and I can't respond to request to e-mail them. Printed OtherRealms: Subscriptions to the printed version of OtherRealms are $2.85 for a single copy or $11 for four issues (one year) to Chuq von rospach, 35111-F Newark Blvd. Suite 255, Newark, CA 94560. The next issue: The next issue of OtherRealms is scheduled to be released by February 15, 1990. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
