Is it up to the task? How can we improve end-to-end reliability in the Internet? This FARNET meeting, co-located with the 22d meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), will focus on technical and management practices that can help us answer this question. Using the large pool of technical experts available from both organizations, we will look at topics such as: Building a network-wide trouble ticket system Managing contracts with vendors and clients Tools for network monitoring and analysis Training your staff and customers Plan to be in Santa Fe on November 17 and 18. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FARNET and the IETF are well suited to work on these problems together. The members of FARNET provide network service to all of the major college and university campuses in US and to many government agencies, research laboratories, and industrial facilities. They have a clear interest in improving the performance of the Internet -- "hardening" the network. The IETF has a long history of solving technical problems and has a number of working groups already looking at issues related to network operations and reliability. FARNET members are encouraged to participate in IETF sessions of interest to them. The fee for attendance at the IETF is $150. This includes the cost of continental breakfast and breaks (five days) and a copy of the Proceedings of the meeting. Because FARNET members may not have received timely information about advance registration (which carries a fee of $130), FARNET will assume the $20 late fee for any FARNET representative for whom this represents a hardship. Additional information about the IETF meeting and agenda will be forwarded to you separately. On Monday evening, FARNET will host a dinner for the IAB and the IESG (Internet Engineering Steering Group). On Tuesday afternoon, FARNET will join the Operations Requirements Area Directorate (ORAD) for a combined meeting. There is no charge for attendance at this meeting. Susan Estrada, FARNET vice president, is a co-chair of ORAD.
