This is ftp://ftp.std.com/obi/Fly/README. Last updated: 0800 UTC on 06 Sep 95. +++ CHANGES (06 Sep 95): This archive is now *quite* obsolete and is no longer being maintained. I would strongly urge serious aviators to seek current FARs on ftp.fedworld.gov, or if you have a web browser, to check out the various selections on http://acro.harvard.edu/GA/ga_info.html. --Dwight Ernest (dernest@significant.com) +++ CHANGES (21 Jan 95): Added far_21.{doc,txt,zip,Z} (FAR Part 21) from ftp.fedworld.gov +++ CHANGES (06 Jan 95): [Paraphrasing Ken Jenks:] The files in the ASCII subdir has .doc extensions and were therefore being interpreted as "Word for Windows" "Content-type" (that's what MIME calls this document format). In this case, this isn't all bad. When a properly configured Web client retrieves one of these .doc files, the Web client will launch Word instead of showing the text in-line within the Web client. This takes a little while longer (to launch Word), but it allows better scrolling and searching capabilities. I have set up a new subdir parallel to the ASCII subdir called ASCII-txt in which the same files are referred to with .txt extensions instead of through .doc extensions, for those who need/want to browse in this way. +++ CHANGES (30 Dec 94): Kevin Kahn has downloaded the latest and greatest from Compuserve, which Rich Cremer of the FAA says are current as of mid-December 1994. There are quite a few more parts now. There is also a helpful index file (far_idx) which is a very handy way to search for subject headings. +++ WWW AVIATION PAGE MAINTAINERS PLEASE NOTE: The new arrangement in this hierarchy is quite a bit better organized, more complete, and more consistently named than the previous hierarchy. If you wish to continue to use HTML coding based on the old organization while you modify the coding on new Web pages to deal with the new organization, the old hierarchy can be found on ftp://ftp.std.com/obi/Fly-Old -- +++ NOTE FROM KEVIN KAHN, July 1994: This directory contains copies of the FAR as provided by Rick Cremer on Compuserve. I [Kevin] only copy the files down from Compuserve and put them here as time permits. I don't have any way of getting files that aren't there yet so please don't swamp me with requests for such. Also, I don't control the format of the contents -- in most cases I haven't even looked at these. So if a file is corrupted let me know and I'll recopy it but if you don't like the way the FAA lays things out in it talk to them :-). I'm sure that some inspired person will figure out how to generate an indexing system for them but that's also not me. What you see is what you get. The files are as follows: [With the new additions placed in the archive on 29 Dec 94, this list is helpful but incomplete. --dae] FAR_1.ZIP FAR PART 1 - DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS FAR_11.ZIP FAR PART 11 - GENERAL RULE-MAKING PROCEDURES FAR_13.ZIP FAR PART 13 - INVESTIGATION AND ENFORCEMENT PROC. In a few cases there may be more than one compress file corresponding to a zip file (e.g. the NTSB regs). Kevin Kahn Intel Architecture Labs kevin_kahn@ccm.jf.intel.com +++ DIRECTORY STRUCTURE The directory structure here contains three top-level dirs, but the contents are identical (except for the storage format): ASCII: files with .doc extensions and PC-compatible (8x3) filenames. Pure ASCII with PC-compatible (cr/lf) line endings. ZIPped: The ASCII files above in PKZIP format. Let me (dae) know if you need tools to deal with these files. This is your best bet if you are downloading to a PC or Windows system. Compressed: These files began as the ASCII files but have been converted to simple UNIX-compatible line endings, and have .Z extensions. They have been compressed using the standard UNIX compress utility. Let me know if you need tools to deal with these files. This is your best bet if you are downloading to a UNIX system. +++ NTSB REGULATIONS ZIPped/nt_reg.zip is a ZIPped archive containing the NTSB regulations in seven files: nt_act.doc nt_845.doc nt_831.doc nt_830.doc nt_821.doc nt_801.doc nt_800.doc This archive master is not maintained as such in the ASCII or Compressed subdirs. Instead, you will find the individual files in those subdirs. +++ MAILING LIST If you wish to be placed on a mailing list to which notices of changes, updates, corrections, and additions to this FAR repository is sent, please send your subscription request to majordomo@world.std.com with a text message saying subscribe far-change ...and you'll automatically be added to the list.
