NARC documentation addendum Version 1.3 Copyright (c) 1987,1988 Infinity Design Concepts ------------------------------------ NARC version 1.3 enhancements Speed improvements. This version of NARC has a greatly streamlined uncruncher. The result is an additional 22% decrease in extraction times. Version 1.3 uses a very large stack, which avoids a time consuming link and relink operation on the string table when decoding each string. Full EGA support. I finally got an EGA card, so NARC followed. (You're welcome Gene!) Handling of sub directories with no ARC files. There were many complaints about how NARC handled this situation. Previously, NARC simply would not let you select a sub directory that contained no ARC files (there is no reason to go there anyway), but this caused a lot of confusion and in response the handling of this situation has been revised. NARC will now show the NO-ARC-FILES window and give several options. Expanded HELP HELP is now available from the NO-ARC-FILES window. Expanded movement in the pop up windows. The HOME,END,PG UP, PG DN and arrow keys now work in all windows. New help windows. There was also a lot of confusion about the subdirectory window and the commands available in that window. There is now a help window that pops up along with the sub directory window showing all available commands. There is a similar window that pops up along with the ARC file window. New View function. This rewrite is the direct result of an overwhelming amount of user requests. (I took a beating on this one!) The HOME,END,PG UP, PG DN and arrow keys all function in view now. There is a WordStar (c) type filter toggle (the "F" key) and a HEX dump mode toggle (the "M" key) that are available at all times. NARC first extracts the file to the default drive into a file called NARC.TMP and then proceeds to view the file. When viewing is finished, the NARC.TMP file is deleted. If there is not enough room on the default drive to create the NARC.TMP file, you are prompted for another drive that can be used for the temporary file. The ESCape key will end the view session. Trivia status screen. This is a new screen that shows some semi-useful information about the current NARC environment. The screen is invoked from the main NARC screen via the ALT-F10 key sequence. Removed check disk space BEFORE extraction feature. This feature was removed after rethinking the process. This was done since MOST extractions will proceed correctly and when this is done on all extractions, speed is sacrificed. If a disk write is unsuccessful, then the user is asked whether or not to continue (if extracting tagged) or abort. If the user aborts, then any partial file is deleted. Command line processor. A command line processor has been added that is compatible with both ARC and PKXARC. There are some variations on the implementation of these commands that are not wholly compatible with ARC and PK. For example, the ONLY command that operates on wildcard subfiles is the extract command. The "T" (test ARC integrity command) will simply open the ARC file and display the main NARC screen. This is done, since NARC does the integrity check when reading the ARC file. The "D" (delete subfile) command will only delete one file at a time. This is done since it is very seldom that files are deleted from an ARC anyway and the wildcard can be very dangerous. Command line syntax: NARC [command] [ARC file] [submask] where; [command] may be any of the following and may be preceeded by "-" or "/" D,-D = delete submask file from ARCmask X,-X,E,-E = extract submask file(s) from ARCmask P,-P = print submask file from ARCmask V,-V,L,-L,T,-T,Z,-Z = open ARCmask file and display files C,-C = view submask file in ARCmask H = shows command line options [ARC file] may be any ARC file with or without the extension. An extension of .ARC is assumed, but may be explicitly inlcuded as .ARC or .ARK. The drive/path may also be included. [submask] may be any valid wildcard filename. ------------------------------------------ FOR REGISTERED USERS ONLY ------------------------------------------ Direct Help and feedback networks. Registered users of NARC now have the option of communicating directly with Infinity Design Concepts via the GTPowercomm Net-Mail network or through the CRS network. Complete information is supplied in the registration packet. You can communicate directly with us for the price of a local phone call! Complete Patch table listings Registered users now receive a complete listing of useful patch locations within NARC. NARCCFG.EXE The configuration program is no longer included in the BBS release of NARC. This file is supplied only to registered users. Bonus Utilities The registration diskette contains several other useful IDC utilities. THANKS ! I would like to extend a very special thanks to all of those who have registered their copy of NARC.
